Summary: Google confirmed that it has completed the ISO 27001 certification for its Google Apps for Business services.
Details: The premium edition of Google Apps has passed this independent security audit and added it to its list of certifications. The security audit covers its data centres, systems, technology and processes.
Angle: The takeaway here is that Google is no different from any service provider. It has to abide by the same standards and get all the requisite certifications if it plans to compete in the mid-market to enterprise space. Hosters and service providers competing with Google can no longer depend on it to fall short when it comes to being a service provider. It will continue to add those characteristics over time. It is worth nothing that this certification is only for the Google Apps for Business paid services. This is not to say the free and education versions do not live in similar environments to Google Apps for business. It is only to say that Google has not went out and undertaken the audit to get certification.
