Earnings, executive changes, M&A, Asia-pacific, expansion, migration
It was an eventful week from across the sector with more results, movement in executive circles, strategic activity in cloud and data centre expansions.
Earnings season continues and we took a closer look at the results coming from CyrusOne, GDS in China, CoreSite and TeraGo Networks in Canada. Existing customer growth continues to be a driver behind some very solid results on the colocation side.
The summer does not typically see a lot of management changes, but the recent week was an exception. Digital Realty Trust COO Jarrett Appleby will be moving on and Endurance International finalized its search for a new CEO. Meanwhile, Cologix in Denver shuffled a few executive seats as well.
Just last week, Cloudreach acquired a firm called Cloudamize and this week it picked up another shop – Emerging Technology Advisors in Reston, Virginia – as it pushes expansion of its range of capabilities. Microsoft also expanded its arsenal in cloud with the acquisition of Cycle Computing. Cycle is focused on HPC and gives Microsoft technology it can use to accelerate its pursuit of this workload demographic.
There was also strategic activity on the SMB side and it was global in nature. Hostopia acquired Australian hoster Digital Pacific and J2 Global in Los Angeles bought some hosted/SaaS service providers in Europe and Asia-pacific.
The Asia-pacific, and specifically greater China, continues to see activity and this past week Equinix – home to many cloud and hosting providers – confirmed its plans to further expand in Hong Kong. GDS is also seeing growth propelled by its large cloud infrastructure provider customers.
There was also notable activity on the managed third party cloud side. Cloud Technology Partners has a new program for on-boarding to cloud and Rackspace is deepening its partnership with AWS. If there was any doubt behind AWS’s growth, this past week saw more product launches and it included more migration services designed to accelerate the movement of IT real estate to its cloud. Meanwhile, it continues to rack up wins with large customers. Microsoft also had a profile win for Azure.
