Strategic buyers, M&A, APAC, clouds, global requirements

The past week was another busy one on the strategic side of things, while the global cloud build out, particularly in APAC, continues full steam ahead.

The highest profile development saw Equinix pick up the Infomart Dallas facility as it looks to further fortify its ownership and presence in primary interconnection hubs.

There were a pair of notable transactions in Canada. On the hosting side, Toronto’s Tenzing acquired Thinkwrap Commerce and Spark::red and on the data centre side, Montreal’s eStruxture picked up the Kolotek data centre facility. Elsewhere, Unitas Global was the latest to pick up a cloud consulting shop and CloudJumper acquired IndependenceIT.

The global cloud build out shows no signs of slowing down. Google is planning its next APAC cloud builds in Japan and South Korea, while Oracle is doing the same in those two countries in addition to a number of other APAC locations and around the world. There were also a number of builds – in Japan and the Nordics – said to be serving hyperscale tenants. Hyperscale builds, like the ones Oracle is building, continue to opt for leasing arrangements in large numbers. But there are self-builds going on in core markets. AWS, for example, is said to be building another campus in NoVA on its own.

Data centre requirements also continue to go global and more partnerships have been set up to facilitate multiple-site deployments across borders. The latest saw Telehouse and Sabey partner.

Earnings season is picking up the pace and we look at the results coming from SMB hoster Web.com.

And in other notable developments, Rackspace is set to reduce its workforce, while there was a massive power outage at Vocus in Australia that stranded a lot of hosting customers.
