Global M&A, strategic moves, SMB, outages
The sector had another busy week on the strategic side. Many of the developments reflect the increasingly global nature of the infrastructure services game.
The strategic activity on the data centre side was decidedly global in nature. Equinix acquired Zenium in Turkey as it looks to expand its presence in Istanbul, while Singapore’s STT took full control of London-based data centre operator VIRTUS. Still in Asia, GDS took over a a fully occupied data centre in Guangzhou, China. And in Europe, Sweden’s Multigrid added to its resources as well.
There was also some reporting this past week that UK-based Interoute is moving towards some bigger strategic moves.
On the SMB and hosting side, there were a pair of notable developments from the messaging and collaboration segment. AppRiver was acquired by a private equity firm and Germany-based Open-Xchange raised another €21m to support its ongoing growth. Meanwhile, Hostopia confirmed its recent acquisition in Australia.
Over to the vendor side, cloud management platform DivvyCloud raised a small equity round and Docker is closing in on another substantial raise.
Last week, we took a closer look at some rather controversial comments regarding the future of data centres. The commentary can be found here.
There have been some outages lately. Azure recently shared a few details about its outage and Linode had some problems with its location in Germany.
Growth for infrastructure providers continues to be driven by global footprints. WP Engine expanded its footprint and Digital Ocean is seeing momentum in India.
