It was another busy week in the sector highlighted by some interesting developments on the edge infrastructure side.
We have been following Vapor IO, which is building micro data centres at the base of cell towers in edge locations. The concept is getting closer to reality and Vapor IO recently partnered up with New York-based hoster Packet. Vapor IO will build the data centres and Packet will colocate. Another noteworthy development around edge was the recent Compass Data Centers acquisition of EdgePoint and BitBox. Compass is looking to take its built-to-suit model to the edge and in smaller increments.
There was other strategic activity of note. IPI Partners bought the remaining data centre assets in the Infomart portfolio, while Jungle Disk acquired TeamPassword as it looks to address more SMB pain points. Big consulting firms like Deloitte continue to add cloud expertise and in New Zealand, Deloitte picked up an AWS shop called API Talent. And on the storage side, Cloudian picked up Infinity Storage.
The global cloud build out continues. Alibaba continues to expand and brought online a new node in Jakarta, Indonesia. Meanwhile, there is more inventory coming into this developing market. Elsewhere, Microsoft opened up another region in France for Azure and disclosed the other countries on its roadmap. Others like Equinix, CoreSite, Aligned and Zayo also confirmed new expansions.
There were also significant wholesale colocation wins and renewals. AirTrunk in Australia won a deal with Datacom and QTS renewed 19 MW worth of inventory.
We continue to move through earnings season. This past week, we took a closer look at the results from CoreSite.
