The sector began to pick up the pace again after public holidays towards the end of May in the UK, US and Canada.

The M&A arena was busiest. On the SMB side, Hostway picked up the retail hosting assets Ingram Micro purchased several years earlier through a different transaction. Meanwhile, on the data centre side, Iron Mountain continued to add to its growing portfolio with the purchase of Netherlands-based EvoSwitch. There were also more data centre facility transactions. Chirisa Investments is set to enter the wholesale market in the US and over in Europe, DigiPlex did a sale leaseback with Telia as the anchor tenant.

There was a lot of expansion activity as well. Cologix added inventory in Toronto, DataBank expanded in Pittsburgh and Telehouse expanded in London. Elsewhere, DigiPlex and H5 are building and we had a chance to get more insight into NTT Europe’s expansion plans.

There continues to be a lot of movement in executive circles. Cologix and Rackspace both recently brought on board new CMOs.

We continue to work through earnings reports and looked at Switch this past week. Its results showed some of the variability that comes from being in the wholesale data centre space. On the private side, we got some data points from application hoster Velocity.
