Earnings, APAC, land banking and expansions
It was another busy week, with earnings seasons in full swing and a number of interesting developments coming out of APAC, Meanwhile, there were some notable strategic developments and more land banking and expansion activity in the face of continued wholesale data centre demand.
AWS kicked things off last week and this past week a number of data centre operators reported. At first glance, it looks like things are moving on steadily but not spectacularly. We take a closer look at the numbers coming from Digital Realty and QTS, while on the SMB hosting side, Web.com reported. Over in APAC, we took a look at some results coming out of Malaysia.
The APAC region continues to be busy. Google is in the midst of building in Singapore, while NTT’s Netmagic unit brought online more capacity in some of its key Indian markets. Meanwhile, Equinix continues to expand with customers to the region. On the hosting side, new SMB consolidator Dreamscape confirmed it would be building out its HQ in Singapore.
Elsewhere in the APAC region, we also have some commentary on a recent short seller report that makes a number of questionable assumptions about the data centre business and the Chinese market in particular.
The strategic side was relatively quiet. We tracked some smaller acquisitions made recently by Evolve IP and AppRiver, while over in the UK reporting emerged that UKFast is contemplating an IPO.
With earnings in full swing, it is apparent that hyperscale demand for colocation continues to chug along. Not only are hyperscale platforms entering new markets, they are expanding existing deployments in core markets and often in large increments. Land banking and expansions to address these requirements are taking place across the board and recently involved the likes of CyrusOne, Digital Realty and QTS.
