The sector picked up the pace again after the US Thanksgiving weekend due in no small part to Amazon’s annual AWS re:Invent show in Las Vegas. There were a slew of developments coming out of the event and we will have commentary in the coming weeks, particularly on the impact AWS Outposts will have on the larger infrastructure services ecosystem. AWS Outposts will enable organizations to run AWS cloud-based infrastructure on-premise and extends Aamzon’s reach into more infrastructure real estate. Unsurprisingly, uptake on AWS continues and we do have a few details on some of the latest all-in bets announced at re:Invent.

The edge wasn’t necessarily the focus at AWS, but it was at a very interesting event called IFX hosted by cloud provider Packet. IFX was also held in Vegas this past week and was the home of a two-day conversation about the emerging edge computing ecosystem. A very cool show that was extremely forward looking. Look for IFX to run again in 2019 and it should be bigger and better.

Hyperscale cloud continues to push forward around performance and with that in mind, Oracle Cloud rolled out a bare metal server line. Meanwhile, on the managed third party cloud side, Rackspace recently introduced a new way to consume its managed services. And hyperscale clouds continue to drive the wholesale colocation business. In Montreal, Colo-D brought on another significant tenant.

On the strategic side, it was a bit quiet. Last week, there was strategic chatter circling around data centre operators in global markets around the world. And this past week, ClearDATA, a vertically focused hosting and managed cloud provider, raised a Series E round and H5 Data Centers acquired a carrier hotel in San Antonio.

Finally, there were important developments out of APAC. Digital Realty signed a pre-lease in Osaka and Keppel is engaged for a build-to-suit arrangement in Malaysia.
