It was another busy week, with developments coming out of various pockets within the sector.

Edge continues to develop and this past week we took a closer look at how Limelight is using partnerships and its CDN footprint to enable edge compute services. Meanwhile, on the edge data centre side, EdgeMicro raised some funds as it gets closer to bringing online more edge facilities.

Edge is all about what is next. But traditional services like colocation continue to evolve as the market shifts. We take a closer look at how Cyxtera and QTS are building out new services, enabling hybrid and centralizing procurement, control and management within a single platform.

The past week or so saw a number of developments in South Africa. Microsoft opened its new cloud region there and GoDaddy entered the South Africa market for its SMB hosting services. Huawei is also in the midst of planning new data centres in the country

Cloud continues to push forward and the managed third party market is showing more signs of momentum. In the past week, Tenzing moved an Oracle Commerce customer to AWS, a number of service providers helped Carlsberg move to Azure and Vancis also moved a customer to Azure. Service providers and MSPs continue to add managed third party cloud capabilities as end users adopt public cloud in steadily growing numbers.

The strategic side of things was relatively slow after several busy weeks. But there were rumblings that Zayo was again considering its strategic options, with Digital Colony, which recently acquired the Cogeco Peer1 infrastructure services arm, possibly interested.
