The sector continues to push forward. A busy week saw a number of developments coming out of Europe along with noteworthy developments in edge. Meanwhile, a number of interesting data points were shared by hyperscale clouds, data centre operators and MSPs.

CyrusOne CEO Gary Wojtaszek appeared on CBNC’s Mad Money and shared some interesting data points about the provider’s growth, particularly with respect to Europe. The context of the interview was important because the theme was sectors that do well or are looked on positively when perception and sentiment about the economy is weaker. We have details.

Europe was at the centre of activity in the past week. There is movement towards building an Europe-centric cloud amid US dominance, while CyrusOne noted that it is seeing upside in hyperscale cloud growth in Europe. Elsewhere in the European data centre market, Equinix is close to bringing online a third data centre in Poland and maincubes is planning a second Frankfurt data centre. Google Cloud is pushing its footprint in Europeand partnered up with Telecom Italia for cloud and data centre. This relationship could be moving in an edge direction sooner than later. We have more details.

The edge continues to build out. We will have discussion soon about the Digital Realty and Vapor IO partnership and Fastly is another provider that is working on building an edge compute platform within the confines of a traditional CDN business.

On the strategic side, there continues to be activity in the managed third party cloud market. DoiT international raised $100m and Evocative Data Centers brought in $30m, while Cyxtera spun out the AppGate security business.

Earnings season is moving along, but in the past week we got some interesting data points from private companies and hyperscale clouds. Opus Interactive shared data points about its growth trajectory and AWS shared some insights on its network footprint growth.

Finally, there continues to be active product development across the sector. QTS rolled out an updated version of its management platform, Fastly is working on edge and IBM Cloudis working on a number of new products and services.
