Bare metal, edge, cloud, M&A, Canada, expansions
Things picked up again as AWS held its annual show re:Invent after the US Thanksgiving weekend, while Packet held its edge-focused show IFX, also in Las Vegas. We’ll have more on AWS next week, but there were a number of interesting announcements around edge and edge-like data centre infrastructure. Stay tuned for the details.
Edge represents the future and where infrastructure is going. But Google recently rolled out a new offering that is a more traditional infrastructure service. Google’s new Bare Metal Solution is targeted at legacy workloads that fit better on bare metal and they have created a service that allows customers to host dedicated servers, while interconnecting with Google’s public cloud.
Cloud continues to develop and evolve and there is a lot more movement towards interoperability, partnership and multi-cloud. 2nd Watch is well on its way to supporting multiple platforms and rolled out a new VMware Cloud on AWS service. Google is enabling VMware as well and acquired CloudSimple to further enhance its technology capabilities.
There was other M&A in the sector. NTT Data Services acquired cloud consultancy Flux7and Evocative Data Centers acquired VPLS and re-branded.
And of course, the global cloud build out continues unabated. Hypertec recently acquired land in Montreal to support more hyperscale expansion, while Azure went live with a new region in Norway.
Last week, we published our Montreal + Quebec City data centre and interconnection report. This report and our Toronto report are updated with additional hyperscale node mapping and commentary. Ask us for details.
