Edge, AWS Local Zone, M&A, IPO
The end of the calendar year saw things slow down but there were a number of noteworthy developments. We mentioned how the the introduction of AWS Local Zone looks like the AWS answer for the edge. And AWS now has a use case that will scale across multiple forthcoming Local Zone locations.
The edge will again be a hot topic of conversation at the third annual infra // STRUCTURE summit in Toronto on May 6-7, 2020. In 2018, the theme was hyperscale and the new world order. In 2019, it was decentralization: beyond hyperscale. And in 2020, we bring this conversation full circle with the theme of convergence: bridging hyperscale and edge in a decentralizing world. We have a number of committed sponsors already and we’d like to thank them for the early support: Packet, Ubersmith, Layer 7 Capital, RBC Capital Markets, Opus Interactive, CoreSite, NetApp and Total Product Marketing. Early bird registration opens January 2020.
On the M&A side, it was a busy end to the year and towards the end of December in Canada, Carbon60 acquired Cirrus9, while Colony Capital took majority control of data centre operator DataBank. Meanwhile, in APAC, things continue to develop with expansion activity in India and Indonesia and a planned IPO for another China-based data centre operator. The other segment to watch in 2020 will be interconnection. Nodes continue to be brought online and to facilitate this growth, Megaport raised capital for the second time this year.
