M&A, data centre expansions, interconnection, managed third party cloud
The sector continued to be busy as long weekends approached in the US, UK and Canada.
There continues to be M&A activity on a global basis. In the US, Cologix acquired a vXchnge data centre in Minneapolis as it consolidates its position in that market. Over in Europe, Claranet continues to use M&A to expand to new markets. The acquisition of CorpFlex in Brazil is a beachhead for Claranet’s ambitions in Latin America. Meanwhile, in APAC, Equinix took its option to purchase the land supporting its SG3 data centre in Singapore from Mapletree.
Data centre expansion activity shows no signs of slowing down. NTT GDC outlined its expansion plans in multiple markets around the world, while STACK INFRASTRUCTURE, Digital Realty and Colovore confirmed expansion activity in the US and Canada. Elsewhere in APAC, PCCW launched a new data centre in Hong Kong.
Interconnection continues to drive separation in the market and elevate the value proposition of certain operators. Digital Realty brought online a new retail colocation offering in Toronto that will help push uptake of interconnection services and customers are increasingly asking for precisely these kinds of capabilities when selecting data centre providers.
The growth of public cloud is also creating more demand for managed third party cloud services. In the past week, we saw Ensono win some managed Azure business and Bharti Airtel in India partnered with AWS to build this line of business for its portfolio.
