It was another busy week highlighted by the stream of announcements coming out of the virtual AWS re:Invent conference.
This past week we took a closer look at some of the edge related announcements. AWS has put the buildings blocks in place over the last few years and in 2020 it now has a full fledged edge portfolio. AWS believes the world will be distributed and hybrid and it is adapting and extending its platform accordingly. Andy Jassy also shared a few data points about the cloud arm’s overall progress.
It has been a busier year on the IPO side and in the past week media reports surfaced suggesting Squarespace is looking at a possible IPO in 2021. Every time a technology company files its S-1 there are interesting data points about cloud and infrastructure consumption. Gaming platform Roblox shared some insights and we comment briefly on the cloud implications of the Salesforce acquisition of Slack.
Elsewhere on the strategic side, American Tower added to its portfolio of wireless sites that it could potentially monetize for edge computing, while Google acquired an enterprise application backup and DR provider. There also was a sales-leaseback of a data centre in Tokyo.
Data centre expansions continue and there was more activity coming out of APAC. AirTrunk opened its Singapore and Hong Kong sites, Equinix confirmed plans to build a fifth data centre in Singapore and some details were revealed about a new data centre park being planned for South Korea. Elsewhere, Stream Data Centers and CoreSite were involved in expansion activity.
Interconnection demand shows no signs of slowing down and a number of Google Cloud Interconnect nodes popped up with Cologix, CyrusOne and EdgeConneX across a number of US markets.
