AWS, cloud, Australia, M&A, Europe, hyperscale expansions
The sector saw a slight dip in activity as the year is about to draw to a close.
AWS recently held re:Invent on a virtual basis and there was the usual barrage of product announcements. We looked at the AWS edge infrastructure portfolio last week and review some of the other interesting announcements. More logos continue to gravitate to AWS, including Airbnb and Zoom, which Oracle Cloud disclosed as a customer this year, but looks like is still in a supporting role.
There was notable activity in Australia in recent weeks. AWS is building out a new region in Melbourne as the Australia market continues to grow. The trajectory had led to more activity on the edge and new provider Leading Edge Data Centres is moving quickly to pursue this opportunity. Meanwhile, on the SMB side, Hostopia confirmed that it would consolidate its data footprint in Australia with Equinix.
It was relatively quiet in M&A but two recent deals caught our attention: on the managed cloud side and the other in the master agent community: Timico in the UK acquired Acrus Cloud Services and Columbia Capital took a stake in Telarus.
Finally, there was more hyperscale data centre activity. Microsoft continues to expand in Denmark and confirmed its newest cloud region will be in Chile. Still in Europe, Interxion confirmed it was building a third and much larger site in Copenhagen, Denmark.
