It was a busy week, particularly in Europe, as cloud adoption continues to accelerate and drive infrastructure expansion.

There were a number of noteworthy developments Germany and Poland. DATA4 entered its latest new market with a planned 50MW campus in Warsaw, Poland, while Iron Mountain acquired a data centre in Frankfurt, Germany and also shared some interesting insights about its European expansion activity. NTT GDC also recently  shared insights with us on its Germany footprint. Meanwhile, MTS acquired a data centre in RussiaVantage broke ground on previously confirmed builds in Warsaw and Berlin and Interxion is building fibre to connect its London data centres. And on the cloud side, Google is evaluating a number of markets for new data centre locations.

On the end user side, in a rather surprising development, media outlets say Echelon will be hosting TikTok at its Dublin data centre campus. TikTok and the larger ByteDance operation continue to consume data centre capacity and there is consistent chatter around new ventures being established that could substantially increase its requirements in Europe and around the world.

Elsewhere, there was more product development activity on the cloud and hosting side. Linode released new security products and OVH partnered with Aiven for Database-as-a-Service in Europe.

It is increasingly evident that the pandemic has accelerated the movement to cloud and in Canada, two major banks have made the move, with CIBC being the latest and choosing Microsoft Azure after BMO recently picked AWS. On the telco side, Swisscom chose AWS as its preferred cloud provider.

Finally, we take a closer look at some of the insights garnered from the recent Equinix Analyst Day.
