It was another busy week across the sector that was highlighted by activity in the hyperscale and cloud infrastructure markets.
Earnings seasons continues and there has been steady performance across the board. We have looked at the big three hyperscalers and they are showing signs of growth acceleration moving into the second half of the year. On the SMB cloud side, Digital Ocean is showing similar patterns, with growth rates ticking up, while in the MSP segment, Rackspace turned in some steady results, with the part of the business that lives within the public cloud value chain performing above the rest of the business.
The managed public cloud market continues to develop and the traditional on-premise world remains a key source of the opportunity pipeline and both Rackspace and Aptum disclosed wins that saw them move customers from traditional to public cloud infrastructure. Meanwhile, the investments required to pivot into this business model continue as Rackspace reported against the backdrop of a restructuring, while MSP Mission is investing in the underlying support infrastructure required to serve more advanced customers and requirements.
The public cloud market is a short field and many large technology entities have already made a bid and mostly exited. Cisco is said to be thinking about this market again and we take a closer look at its chances.
Europe continues to see a lot of hyperscale data centre activity. We recently spoke with Telehouse for an update, while Green Mountain added capacity in Norway, Ark outlined new sustainability features, Safe Host revealed plans for another Swiss data centre and Interxion is expanding in Dusseldorf.
Two markets that have seen an uptick in activity of late include India and Israel and there were a few more notable developments in the past week. Global Technical Realty, backed by KKR, will enter Israel, while NTT struck a JD deal for a new Mumbai data centre.
Finally, it was a relatively busy week on the hosting and cloud side, with Name.com partnering with Digital Ocean, Miss Group acquiring another SMB hoster in Spain and Nexcess launching a new WooCommerce enhancement.
