Hyperscale, managed public cloud, APAC, Google Cloud, self-builds
The past week saw more activity in hyperscale, strategic developments and executive hires in APAC and further momentum up the stack in managed public cloud.
Hyperscale cloud continues to be a driver of wholesale data centre expansion and the unique requirements and increasing prevalence of self-builds are shifting colocation business models. The recent Google Cloud expansion in Ohio is a case in point and sheds light on the strategies of operators that are trying to time and anticipate hyperscale demand – something that is far from linear and can be unpredictable.
Hyperscale consumption continues to be driven by born on the cloud companies and the level of consumption is massive. We take a closer look at the Pinterest use of AWS.
The self-build side saw momentum recently, with AWS acquiring more land in NoVA, Facebook selecting Phoenix as a location for a new build, Microsoft expanding with both colocation and self-builds in Atlanta, and Google planing a second Italy region in Turin.
The unprecedented activity plays itself out in the numbers. Hyperscale was a driver of CyrusOne’s recent results, particularly in Europe, as well as for QTS. Meanwhile, operators like South Africa’s Teraco completed an expansion in Johannesburg and Equinix brought online its fifth data centre in Singapore.
Asia continues to see substantial hyperscale activity and real estate and logistics firms are looking closely at the opportunity. Another new platform, to be led by former Digital Realty and Bridge Data Centres executive Kris Kumar, was formed by PAG Real Estate and is expected to look at a few of the more established markets in the region. Other operators are positioning to push further in APAC and recently hired new executives. Digital Edge brought in a new chief investment officer and EdgeConneX has a new MD for APAC based out of Singapore.
The managed public cloud market is still young and developing, but things are moving up the stack at an accelerating rate. AWS introduced a new managed security standard and a number of MSPs and service providers are set to delivery these capabilities to end users. Competency around security is the foundation for security and compliance practices and Mission hired a new CISO to lead the way into this opportunity. There continues to be M&A in this area and the latest acquisition saw InterVision acquire SyCom Technologies.
