The past week was highlighted by a number of product launches on the cloud side, some notable customer wins and more strategic activity around developing markets in APAC and EMEA.

Cloudflare has the product assembly line in full swing and its new R2 cloud storage product is an intriguing attempt to disrupt the public cloud space. It also speaks to the transition to cloud and edge computing that CDNs with distributed footprint and networks are looking to pursue. Cloudflare also rolled out email security capabilities and performance tools, while confirming plans to extend its network into on-premise locations.

A number of wins on the cloud side caught our attention. In Canada, yet another major financial institution is using more cloud infrastructure and the choice is being driven by the need for analytics and machine learning tools. Elsewhere, OVHcloud won a smart city deal in the Atlanta area and Decathlon is using colocation and cloud across a number of vendors.

It was a relatively quiet week in M&A, but on the technology side, Virtuozzo acquired PaaS provider Jelastic in a deal aimed at rounding out Virtuozzo’s technology portfolio for enabling service providers.

Hyperscale growth and climbing enterprise adoption around the world continues to push acquisition in emerging markets. Singtel confirmed partnerships that will target emerging markets in Thailand and Indonesia, while new operating platforms like EDNEX – targeting EMEA to APAC – are being established. Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel plans to expand the Nxtra data centre footprint in India and Bulk Infrastructure acquired more land in the Nordics.

In other developments of note, Equinix opened a new data centre in FrankfurtMicrosoft is planning more data centres for the San Antonio area and there was activity in subsea  cable  development and expansion.
