The past week saw significant activity around SAP and its move to public cloud, while there were a number of interesting transactions, expansions in global markets and appointments.

Virtustream has always done well hosting managed SAP on its proprietary cloud, but recently made the pivot to supporting multiple public cloud platforms. Competitor Lemongrass did the same as it continues to help end users move SAP to multiple public cloud services. Another provider that competes in this sphere is Protera Technologies. An early mover in managed SAP on AWS, Protera took on investment capital earlier this year and recently brought in a new CEO, formerly of NTT’s Secure-24.

On the M&A side, there were a number of deals with different angles. A new managed infrastructure provider called DaSTOR was formed out of a pair of asset transactions in the Pennsylvania area, while Destiny in Belgium acquired managed hosting provider Stuart to expand its capabilities into cloud and hosting. Meanwhile, American Tower continues to pick up data centre assets in edge markets of interest and on the technology side, NetApp purchased CloudCheckr to extend its infrastructure technology and management capabilities further into public cloud.

Global data centre expansion, pushed by hyperscale, continues to accelerate across the globe. Japan is seeing steady activity and STT GDC will expand into the surging Tokyo market in partnership with Goodman, while PLDT in set to build a hyperscale facility in Manilla. Elsewhere in APAC, US-based STACK Infrastructure set up a regional HQ in Singapore as it looks to enter Japan and potentially other APAC data centre markets. In the US, QTS is working with Facebook and plans to deliver a triple-digit MW site for its accelerating infrastructure requirements and DataBank is set to build further in the metro New York area.

There was quite a bit of movement in executive circles. STACK entered APAC and named a CEO for the region, while Protera brought in a new CEO and eStruxture expanded its management team.

Finally, on the product side, Cyxtera rolled out a more automated colocation experience and Equinix is working on liquid cooling technology.
