Cloud node expansions, subscale expansions, leasing data points, M&A, Frankfurt
The week saw more cloud node expansions across both subscale and hyperscale platforms, evidence of enterprise colocation demand, strategic developments and a few more results coming out of the tail end of earnings season.
Google Cloud continues to expand its footprint. It recently brought online a new region in Columbus, Ohio and just in the past week added Dallas, Texas. It is now up to 11 cloud region locations in the US and Canada. Other hyperscalers continue to expand. Huawei Cloud is building out its footprint and Jakarta, Indonesia is next on its list, while Microsoft added AZs in Switzerland. On the subscale side, Katapult, OVH and Wasabi all added new dots on the map.
Hyperscale cloud growth continues to drive colocation demand and earnings season revealed various data points that confirm this trajectory. The latest data point comes from DigitalBridge and its three operating platforms – DataBank, Vantage Data Centers and Scala Data Centers did a significant volume of leasing in 2021.
The strategic side continues to be busy. American Tower consolidated its data centre portfolio into the CoreSite platform and Redcentric stepped up as a buyer for the distressed Sungard UK assets. Elsewhere, Strategic Datasphere acquired an enterprise data centre in Cleveland.
While hyperscale dominates the discussion, the colocation market continues to see enterprise demand that has shown signs of picking up coming out of the pandemic. Some feedback from operators in Frankfurt provide evidence of this trend.
We also take a closer look at the results coming from French cloud provider OVH, SMB provider Squarespace and Canadian MSP Pivotree.
