A busy week across the sector saw more results from the subscale category, some M&A, leadership transitions and new additions and an email outage that is wreaking havoc on Rackspace.

On the subscale side of the cloud game, growth is pushing through the current environment as the results from Akamai and OVH showed. We take a closer look at the details. On the hyperscale side, we take a look at the struggles that continue at Alibaba Cloud.

The SMB space has been relatively quiet on the strategic side, but there was a significant transaction in Europe, with Cinven and Ontario Teacher’s Pension Plan teaming up to acquire and merge dogado and group.ONE. Meanwhile, Lumen continues to realign as it sells off certain assets, while there were data centre and land acquisitions in Canada and Spain.

Hiring is an ongoing feature of the landscape and Digital Ocean was the latest operator to bring in a new CRO, while there is a leadership transition underway at euNetworks.

The recent week also saw various activity around both subscale and hyperscale cloud. AWS continues to release new products and capabilities and brought online more Local Zones nodes, while Hetzner Cloud spun up a new node in the USTencent Cloud is trying to push its SaaS offerings outside China and Lumen is expanding its intercity network in the US.

Finally, Rackspace is in the midst of a significant outage at its hosted Exchange service. The outage has lasted a week and there is no end in sight. The outage comes at an inopportune time as Rackspace tries to re-position under another new management team amidst slowing growth.
