HPC, AI, next-generation workloads, results, cloud, M&A, data points on cloud adoption
Long weekend holidays in the US, UK and Canada saw activity slow, but there were a number of notable developments.
There continues to be momentum around the next-generation of workloads coming out of the Ai world and chip manufacturers, data centre operators and cloud infrastructure platforms are investing hand building in earnest. In the past week, we saw Ampere Computing roll out a new line of processors and South Africa’s Teraco expanded its partnership with NVIDIA. The push into next-generation workloads is about processing power and the systems needed to cool these machines. Trying to capture value in this pocket is KKR and it recently acquired a company called CoolIT Systems.
We looked at a few more results coming out of earnings season. Cloudflare’s 1Q23 results reflected the recent pattern of deceleration seen across the sector, while Alibaba had a weak quarter and revealed more details about its plans to spin out the cloud arm as an independent entity.
Strategic activity was relatively light, but another data centre platform was transacted with Serverfarm, based in the UK, being acquired by Manulife Investment Management.
Finally, we came across a number of interesting data points and insights about growth in the managed infrastructure ecosystem from Ingram Micro and Acronis. Both ecosystems are serving a wide cross-section of MSPs and service providers and recent indications are that there is still a long way to go when it comes to cloud services adoption.
