AWS, Canada, Local Zones, bare metal, AI, HPC, modular, expansions, M&A
The sector continued to push forward as it came out of long weekends in Canada and the US. AWS continues to build its infrastructure footprint, another bare metal service was introduced by a data centre colocation provider and there was more global expansion activity and some developments in M&A.
AWS was busy around the world. In Canada, it revealed plans to invest in more infrastructure as it closes in on a second cloud region in the country, while bringing online more Local Zones nodes in APAC and Europe. AWS also continues to pursue self-builds and is said to filed more plans in Australia.
Hyperscale cloud continues to drive colocation demand, but it has also created the conditions for interconnection uptake. Meanwhile, AI and HPC computing workloads are looking for the right kind of infrastructure to deploy on. To accommodate these scenarios, colocation providers are rolling out bare metal services and STT GDC in Singapore was the latest, launching a new bare metal infrastructure service housed in modular data centres.
Data centre expansion activity continues to be global in scope. AirTrunk was busy in recent weeks, revealing plans to develop further in Hong Kong and beginning a third phase expansion in Tokyo. In other markets, NTT GDC brought online a building in Chennai, H5 is expanding in Phoenix and Teraco began another expansion in Johannesburg.
Finally, M&A was relatively quiet, but there were a few interesting developments. In France, another data centre divestment happened, with the Iliad Group spinning out the Scaleway data centre business, while on the SMB side, Newfold Digital acquired some e-commerce capabilities.
