The recent week saw important regulatory developments in Singapore, more M&A, movement in the tier under hyperscale and new company formation around AI.

The process of awarding permits to build more data centre capacity in Singapore has gone through a multi-year process. Those granted permission to build up to a total of 80MW was a limited group of companies that fit certain requirements put forth by the Singaporean government. We provide more details.

There were also a few transactions of note in the past week. Ubiquity acquired micro edge data centre provider EdgePresence, while Intelishift recently closed two deals to build out its colocation business.

The hyperscale peer group is small, but an emerging tier below it is gaining ground. Webscale providers like DigitalOcean, Akamai, Cloudflare, OVH and Vultr fit this demographic and we are starting to see new company formation around AI-oriented cloud infrastructure enabled by GPUs. CoreWeave is one of these companies that has seen significant rates of growth and recently raised over $400m in capital.

IBM Cloud is in many ways no longer a hyperscale platform, but it is building out its data centre footprint in a more centralized manner and also gearing its infrastructure to AI-oriented workloads.
