M&A, strategic activity, NVIDIA, GPUs, cloud provider raises, partnerships, APAC
A very busy week saw more M&A activity, a number of developments around the GPU cloud space and continued data centre development activity in APAC.
M&A and strategic activity has picked up in recent weeks. We take a closer look this week at LightEdge’s acquisition of Connectria, which followed the Colohouse acquisition of Hivelocity last week. Meanwhile, GDS brought in a group of investors to support its standalone international business, PIMCO is pushing up its investment in the sector, nLighten acquired more data centres from EXA Infrastructure, and Aligned Data Centers closed another equity investment, while also accessing a new credit facility.
In the wake of NVIDIA’s GTC event, there continues to be significant activity in the GPU cloud space. At GTC, NVIDIA rolled out the new Blackwell chip, which is set to alter infrastructure economics. Along those lines, we also take a look at some of the math coming out of event. The GPU cloud providers continue to raise capital to fund infrastructure growth, while smaller providers with infrastructure operating experience are getting into the game. Lambda raised $500m in additional funding and we had a chance to speak to a new provider called GPU Resources. Elsewhere in the AI world, Oracle Cloud revealed some details about a new partnership with Palantir Technologies.
The rise of Ai and the continued growth of hyperscale cloud infrastructure continues to put constraints on power availability. The pressure is meaningful enough that the sector is looking at a third wave that will see self-generation on-site. We have some more details and analysis on this important topic.
Finally, the sector again saw significant data centre development activity coming out of APAC. MIcrosoft acquired more land in Johor, NEXTDC acquired a data centre in Sydney, while Goodman is also developing a facility in the same area of Sydney.
