Structure Research Introduces Proprietary Data Centre Supply Analysis Methodology

New innovative research methodology measures and projects data centre supply from a space and power perspective and both an aggregate and sub-regional basis.

TORONTO, ONTARIO (PRWEB) SEPTEMBER 15, 2015 — Structure Research, a next-generation research firm focused on the global data centre, hosting and cloud infrastructure services industry, today announced the launch of its proprietary data centre supply analysis methodology.

Structure Research’s proprietary methodology measures data centre capacity from both a space and power perspective. This is crucial because power is the truest unit of capacity in the data centre. Measuring on the basis of space alone only tells part of the story.

Data centre space is also measured incorrectly by many incumbent research firms. There is a distinction to be made between usable sqft (often referred to as net sqft) and rack sqft. Our methodology measures space by counting true rack capacity – based on revenue-generating servers – and does not include capacity dedicated for mechanical and electrical equipment in the calculation.

The other key aspect of this new methodology is the breaking up of any given data centre market according to sub-regional dynamics. There are many data centre markets that have unique competitive dynamics within them and this methodology accounts for that to the extent it is meaningful.

“Traditional broad-reaching regional market supply reports have lost relevancy due to the unique characteristics of each market,” stated Jabez Tan, senior analyst at Structure Research. “Structure Research’s granular city-focused and sub-regional analysis of data centre supply aims to capture such details and valuable city-specific nuances that could make the difference in formulating a successful data centre investment strategy in light of the existing and future competitive landscape.”

Structure Research has applied this new methodology to the study of the Las Vegas and Singapore colocation markets, while a study of Hong Kong is currently in progress. Structure Research is currently evaluating markets in North America, Europe and Asia-pacific that it will study in 2016. Feedback, suggestions and requests are under consideration.

“The data centre market is evolving quickly and the research that supports it needs to change as well,” stated Philbert Shih, managing director of Structure Research. “Many well-known research firms that cover data centres are still focused exclusively on space. This approach is dated and fundamentally flawed. Structure Research was founded to address these shortcomings in the research market and this methodology demonstrates the kind of disruption we are capable of.”
