Earnings, wholesale data centre, cloud, M&A, platforms
Earnings season continues to be in full swing, while the wholesale colocation market saw some new entrants and strategic activity continued.
We took a closer look at the results coming from Equinix (we also got more insight into Equinix’s UK business), Digital Realty Trust, Interxion, DuPont Fabros, CenturyLink, Wix and Endurance International.
Another prominent theme in the past week was the activity around wholesale data centres as the growth in cloud continues to push demand for the underlying infrastructure. The market is attracting new entrants. CloudHQ is entering NoVA and is run by former DuPont Fabros CEO Hossein Fateh and 1547 is making a foray into the San Francisco market. San Francisco is a unique case as there has not been a new build in the city for some time. Is there pent-up demand? We try to answer that question.
There was more strategic activity on the cloud side. Cloudreach recently took on an investment from Blackstone and it has made a move to add more capabilities with the acquisition of a firm called Cloudamize. Meanwhile, Evolve IP is one of those service providers that is crossing over into segments adjacent to pureplay hosting infrastructure and is using M&A to propel growth. Its latest move saw it acquire Mtel, a unified communications provider in The Netherlands.
Another recent development of note is the continued development being put into management platforms, particularly around managing third party cloud environments. QTS added some significant capabilities to help customers manage AWS and Logicworks has done some work in this area of late as well. Meanwhile, on the third party side, Evocative in California deployed Ubersmith for both back end and customer-facing functions.
Finally, there was more uptake in cloud at both AWS and Microsoft Azure and a few interesting use cases in Australia.
