AWS, Outposts, outages, interconnection, footprint expansions
The recent re:Invent show produced a slew of interesting announcements that are sure to keep the cloud sector firing on all cylinders.
The growth trajectory at AWS is no secret. But at re:Invent CEO Andy Jassy shared some updated data points about the business and also commented about M&A. In the past week, we took a closer look at one of the very interesting new products coming out of re:Invent: AWS Outposts. Outposts moves AWS into a potentially disruptive position in the hardware market, while threatening to push it further into IT infrastructure footprints. It is all about locking down and accumulating more IT real estate.
Among the literally hundreds of presentations at re:Invent, there was some interesting discussion around a comment in a session about data centre outages. We took a look at the discussion and draw a few conclusions.
The growth of cloud also continues to impact the wider ecosystem or supporting vendors. Ubersmith added billing support for AWS and is looking to enable service providers and MSPs to get into managed cloud, while VMware continues to get closer to AWS and was a big part of the Outposts announcement.
Elsewhere in cloud, things continue to push forward. Google continues to build out its infrastructure footprint and Tencent is planning to invest more heavily in cloud. Meanwhile, more interconnection points to cloud are being brought online.
Earnings season has come to an end, but we took a closer look at CyrusOne, while getting some visibility into privately held managed hoster UKFast in the UK.
