APAC, hyperscale, Chicago, Toronto, hyperscale M&A
It was a busy week with data centres and hyperscale clouds leading the way.
On the data centre side, there was strategic activity as well as some expansions of note in APAC. Equinix entered the South Korean market through a partnership with Samsung and OneAsia is said to be exploring a new data centre build in Singapore. Meanwhile, Chayora completed the first phase of its hyperscale campus build in Tianjin and is looking to bring on clients like Alibaba Cloud. Alibaba continues to expand and just opened a second AZ in Jakarta, Indonesia. On the strategic side, Global Switch is reported to be looking at Hong Kong for a public listing.
There was M&A activity on the data centre side of things in the US. Interestingly, a lot of recent activity has been focused on Chicago. 1547 acquired a data centre in Chicago and so did Element Critical. New Continuum also acquired a data centre in this market recently.
Another active geography was Toronto. Oracle Cloud was brought online in Toronto and this came with new interconnection options in Cologix data centres, enabled by Megaport. Elsewhere in Canada, eStruxture expanded its facility in Vancouver.
The cloud market saw a lot of M&A activity, reminding everyone that while AWS and other hyperscale clouds grow organically, they are not shy about putting money behind technology and capabilities. AWS acquired TSO Logic and Google acquired DORA.
Finally, AWS rolled out another product that is sure to impact the MSP market. AWS Backup gives end users the ability to backup infrastructure on AWS to S3 and Storage Gateway through a single, centralized interface.
