The sector’s biggest developments came from the data centre space as M&A continues to be front and centre.

A number of large transactions could be in the works (and are definitely active in the rumour mill), but as of yet, nothing has been confirmed. Infrastructure funds are said to be heavily involved and operators are trying to get a handle on what valuations look like and how things might play out.

There were however, deals of note. Equinix entered a third market in Latin America with the purchase of a data centre portfolio from Mexican telco Axtel. Telco spin-outs are steady contributors to the M&A pipeline and Telecom Italia emerged in the rumour mill as the next possible candidate.

There was more M&A on the managed cloud side of the game. 2nd Watch is one of the ‘pureplay’ managed third party cloud providers and ST Telemedia in Singapore acquired a majority stake. STT also acquired a stake in Armor a few years back and is assembling a portfolio of public cloud-focused MSPs.

Google was at the forefront of developments in managed third party cloud. Deloitte is investing in its capabilities around Google Cloud and organizations in Canada and the UKmoved to Google Cloud. One of those customers – IMG Financial in Canada – moved its SAP infrastructure to Google cloud. On the Azure side, Rackspace added another customer.

Back to the data centre space, there were a number of strategic developments of note.Chayora in China and Ark Data Centres in the UK secured more funding, while Equinix and GIC completed its joint venture to build data centres in Europe.

Meanwhile, on the expansion side, STACK acquired a facility and site in Ohio, Cyxtera exapnded to Amsterdam with CyrusOne, Cologix expanded in Dallas and CoreSite brought online more inventory in Virginia.
