M&A, Canada, Europe, IPO markets, APAC, cloud, interconnection
It was a busy week as the sector moved back into gear after the long weekend.
M&A was at the forefront of developments in recent weeks. In Canada, eStruxture acquired the Canadian data centre assets of Aptum Technologies in a deal that made sense for both sides, while Montreal’s Sherweb acquired a white label support provider as it continues to gear up to serve the channel. In the US, Dartpoints acquired an established data centre operator in South Carolina called Immedion as part of its strategy of building infrastructure and connectivity ecosystems in edge markets. There were also transactions on the SMB side of things. Site builder Squarespace came out of the blue to acquire Tock, an online reservation and events management system, and there was more consolidation in Europe, with pan-European provider team.blue picking up a provider in Greece.
The IPO markets continue to be active, but the next few entrants from the hosting and cloud side might take a while. Squarespace was rumoured to be looking at going public, but the Tock acquisition is a clear sign that it will re-focus on growth and expansion after recently raising more capital from new investors. Elsewhere, unified communications provider Intermedia delayed its IPO amid tepid interest and another possible entrant OVH is still dealing with the painful fallout from its data centre fire.
There was a number of developments coming out of the APAC region. On the M&A side, new entrant Digital Edge entered the South Korean market through a carve-out of telco data centre assets, while Digital Realty brought its third data centre in Singapore online. Builds aimed at hyperscale tenants continue in large APAC markets like India and China.Yotta Infrastructure will build a multi-MW facility in Delhi and 21Vianet is working with Microsoft on a new region in China. Finally, Tencent Cloud confirmed plans to expand its cloud infrastructure footprint to Bahrain.
Over in Europe, the market continues to see steady activity. KevlinX is building in Brussels and disclosed new connectivity and CDN partners that will populate its ecosystem, EdgeConneX disclosed plans to build in Barcelona, Spain, Oracle Cloud will be lighting up another interoperability node in Frankfurt and NorthC in The Netherlands also boosted connectivity options within its footprint.
The edge market continues to grow. Barcelona and Brussels can be considered edge markets and within larger countries like the UK, there are second tier markets emerging that are attracting new entrants. We spoke to one of them recently: a new provider called SilverEdge DC. Elsewhere, Google Cloud is rumoured to be planning a cloud region for Israel and American Tower launched a new edge data centre in Pittsburgh.
