APAC, Europe, hyperscale expansions, M&A, hires, SMB
Long weekends in the US and Canada slowed things down across the sector, but there was steady activity coming out of the APAC region.
There were a number of data centre developments of note coming out of various geographies in APAC. Princeton Digital Group entered the Japanese market with plans for a hyperscale build in the Tokyo area, STT GDC brought online its new Singapore data centre in Loyang, iAdvantage confirmed plans to build a new facility in Hong Kong, while Ascendas and CapitaLand partnered to develop a hyperscale data centre in Mumbai.
The M&A arena was quite, but there was some activity of note. Cloud consultancies continue to be strategic targets and this time a colocation specialist – Evoque DCS – was on the buying side, picking up Silicon Valley-based Foghorn Consulting. The move is part of a larger strategic shift away from standard, plain vanilla colocation. Meanwhile, IPI Partners made its second acquisition in Europe this year with the purchase of Nordics-focused operator DigiPlex and Penta Infra bought a data centre in Denmark. And on the SMB side, INAP’s Ubersmith spun out of the company and was acquired by Lumine Group.
A few high profile names in the hosting and cloud sector landed at new homes. Acronis brought in Patrick Pulvermueller as CEO and Will Charnock joined Linode as CTO.
There were also some interesting developments around data location in the UK and Europe, while on the product side, Cox Communications moved into edge computing, WP Engine introduced a new managed WordPress service and Digital Ocean partnered with MongoDB for managed database services.
