Hyperscale, SMB, earnings, expansions, USA, M&A
It was another busy week across the sector, with more numbers coming out of earnings season, data centre and hyperscale expansion in a number of emerging markets, along with some M&A.
The health of hyperscale was the early story in earnings season, but China’s tech sector has faced headwinds of late and Alibaba Cloud’s growth has taken a turn in a different direction. We took a look at results coming from some key SMB providers – GoDaddy, Squarespace and Zix – and they showed solid forward progress. We also delved into the results from Cyxtera on the data centre and interconnection side.
There was plenty of expansion activity in key US markets. Aligned is building a second data centre campus in Salt Lake City, QTS is doubling down in Atlanta and NTT is building another campus in the Phoenix area. NTT GDC is also building in Europe and confirmed plans to expand in Zurich, Switzerland. In APAC, the rapidly expanding Australian market continues to see momentum. NEXTDC was the latest to acquire land for a build over 100MW and in Japan, AT TOKYO is expanding in some new markets.
Speaking of new markets, EdgeConneX entered Israel with the acquisition of Global Data Center, which has two facilities in the Tel Aviv area. Other M&A developments saw Limelight Networks buy Layer0, Otava acquire NewCloud Networks, while Microsoft picked up some new technology for Teams that could also make its way to the Azure cloud and Atos acquired a HPC company called Nimbix.
