M&A, telcos, hyperscale, APAC, Utah, interconnection
The sector picked up the pace coming out of long weekends in the US and Canada.
The M&A arena was busy. On the cloud side, there were more technology acquisitions, with Digital Ocean acquiring serverless technology startup called Nimbella. On the data centre side, Equinix completed its acquisition of GPX Systems and gives it an initial footprint in India in the key market of Mumbai, while Novva Data Centers in Utah acquired an asset in Colorado Springs. Over in Europe, investment platform Digital 9 Infrastructure acquired Iceland’s Verne Global.
Telco spin-out activity is now moving to the APAC region. PCCW recently divested its data centre assets to DigitalBridge and there was media reporting in the last few weeks that suggest PLDT in The Philippines and Indosat in Indonesia are evaluating similar transactions.
Salt Lake City is an emerging market with plenty of potential. Along with the Novva acquisition, DataBank broke ground on SLC6 at its campus in Bluffdale, Utah.
The second or emerging tier of infrastructure markets like Salt Lake City continue to see more activity. To address the growth in capacity and connectivity requirements, EdgeConneX lit up a 100gbps AWS Direct Connect node in Portland, Oregon, Pulsant shared insights on its edge markets in the UK and a new provider emerged in Alabama.
Finally, results continue to come in from markets around the world. Macquarie Data Centres and NEXTDC reported from the busy Australian market and we took a quick look at Akamai and Cloudflare, which have benefited from the continued surge in online activity.
