Earnings, M&A, managed infrastructure, strategic buyers, expansions, partnerships
Another busy week saw earnings season kick off, while there was significant M&A activity in the managed infrastructure and connectivity space, along with new expansions and partnerships.
Microsoft reported its results and provided more more colour on the Azure cloud business. Azure continues to grow, but the slowing in the pace of growth continues and we take a look at some of the relevant data points. AWS and Google reported similar patterns in their trajectories and we will have details soon. Layoffs in big tech continue and the public cloud arms have been largely insulated form this activity, but there are some signs that may be changing as reporting indicates AWS has cut back on some headcount.
The past week saw a number of notable acquisitions. Cox Communications acquired New York-based MSP Logicworks as it eyes entry into the managed public cloud space, while HostPapa acquired Hostopia’s web hosting assets and PacketFabric and Unitas Global will merge their connectivity platforms.
Expansion activity continues to push forward on a global basis. CyrusOne acquired land in NoVA and Frankfurt to serve hyperscale expansion requirements, AirTrunk entered the market in Johor, Malaysia and EdgeCore broke ground in Silicon Valley. Hyperscalers continue to use data centre colocation, but are also doing build-to-suits and self-building in select locations and markets. AWS is doubling down in Virginia and Google is doing a BTS in India.
Finally, there were a few new partnerships of note. NYI will be the operating partner for the 75 Broad Street carrier hotel in New York owned by JEMB Realty, Recovery Point Systems teamed up with Pure Storage for DR and Oracle Cloud and Red Hat collaborated to get REHL integrated on OCI.
