Master-planned data centre parks, hyperscale, edge nodes, CapEx, self-builds, product development
It was a busy week that saw more from earnings season, continued activity from master-planned data centre park operators, edge node expansion, self-builds and product development from cloud and managed infrastructure providers.
We will have more from earnings season next week, but this week we take a closer look at the results coming from Meta, focusing in on CapEx projections and data centre development. In line with what the other hyperscalers are expecting, 2024 is set to see a material increase in CapEx outlays and most of it is going to data centres and server infrastructure.
There continues to be steady activity in the master-planned data centre space, with the likes of Tract, PowerHouse, TA Realty and Chirisa Data Technology Parks making moves. Tract acquired more land to expand its campus in Reno, Nevada, while PowerHouse acquired a site in Spotsylvania, PA and Chiris Investments launched a new operating platform and partnered with PowerHouse on certain developments.
Elsewhere in the sector, there was significant edge node expansion activity. AWS expanded its Local Zones footprint in Chicago, while OVHcloud is set to bring online a global footprint of edge nodes across its footprint. It will start in Belgium and Spain, and a new region is set to launch in Toronto.
There was more self-build activity. Microsoft is preparing a self-build in South Africa and AWS is doing the same in Chile.
Finally, there was more product development activity. DigitalOcean released newly enhanced backup services and Rackspace has a new AI Anywhere product that is built for on-premise installations.
