The sector had a busy week, with activity in Southeast Asia, hyperscale land acquisitions, developments in energy, large-scale cloud investments and expansions, and more from earnings season.
There was significant activity in Southeast Asia, with ByteDance set to invest over $2b in Malaysia, Bridge Data Centres partnering with Mah Sing Group to development a campus in KL and UEM Sunrise and LOGOS partnering with ambitions to develop a data centre in Johor Bahru. Malaysia saw a significant volume of activity, but other parts of SEA were busy as well. DAMAC from the UAE acquired a site to develop a downtown Jakarta data centre. And elsewhere in Asia, AWS will build out its first cloud infrastructure region in Taiwan, while Alibaba Cloud’s recent results showed continued sluggishness.
Hyperscalers continued to acquire land and make investments for skills and training. Google made more investments in Ohio, Microsoft acquired land in Phoenix for development and is planning to invest in Zaragoza, Spain for future expansion needs. Meanwhile, Microsoft and AWS confirmed major investments in skills and training. Microsoft will invest $3.2b in two years in Sweden, while AWS has a 15-year plan in place for Taiwan.
On the energy side, the past week saw more investigation of alternative energy sources in Ireland as hyperscalers look for ways to deal with ongoing power constraints.
There was also notable launches and development projects kicking off in the past week. Compass Data Centers began work on its campus in Chicago, Telehouse Canada launched its new data centre portfolio in Canada and Equinix is making forward progress on a second data centre in Lisbon, Portugal.
Finally, Oracle Cloud reported its latest quarterly results, which showed healthy growth levels as it responds to AI demand, while grappling with ongoing capacity constraints.
