Singapore data centre operators eye China market
Jabez Tan, senior analyst with Canada-based Structure Research, which did a study on the Singapore data centre market, told The Business Times that this interest in China is not simply limited to tapping the growth potential of doing business there. “Colocation providers in Singapore are positioning themselves to capture growth from Chinese companies looking to expand their data centre infrastructure outside of China”.
Mr Tan added that both standalone and colocation data centres will continue to co-exist moving forward, though the trend will be that an increasing amount of data centre workload will begin to migrate into co-location data centres and not the other way around.
The analyst added that Structure Research’s study indicates that the Singapore co-location market generated US$963 million in revenue in 2014 and is projected to grow at a two-year CAGR of 15 per cent to more than US$1.2 billion in 2016. There are 44 unique colocation data centres Singapore totally around 2 million square feet of data centre capacity and over 200 MW of critical IT power with more facilities in the pipeline for 2015 and 2016.
